High Court Upholds SBI Action Against Employee for Misconduct: A Wake-Up Call for Bank Staff

SBI Employee Penalized for Misconduct: High Court Confirms Disciplinary Action

In a significant judgment that reinforces workplace ethics in the banking sector, the Gujarat High Court recently upheld the disciplinary action taken by the State Bank of India (SBI) against one of its employees for serious misconduct. The case highlights the judiciary firm stance on accountability and professional behaviour in public sector banks.

The SBI staffer, who served as an Assistant in the bank’s Petlad branch in Gujarat, was found guilty of misbehaving with customers and neglecting his duties. According to internal records, the employee used abusive language and displayed a persistent lack of discipline, including sleeping on duty and acting rudely toward the branch manager.

Following a formal inquiry, the bank imposed a disciplinary penalty, reducing the employee salary by two increments. The staff member challenged the decision, arguing that the punishment was excessive and unfair.

However, the High Court dismissed his plea, stating that the employee had been given ample opportunity to defend himself during the internal inquiry process. The court emphasised that public sector employees must maintain a high standard of conduct, particularly in customer-facing roles like banking.

In its verdict, the court noted that indiscipline and disrespectful behavior not only tarnish the bank's image but also erode public trust. As such, the decision by SBI to penalise the employee was both fair and lawful.

This judgment sends a clear message that banks, especially those operating with public funds, have every right—and responsibility—to enforce strict conduct codes among their staff. Disrespectful or negligent behaviour toward customers will not be tolerated and may result in firm disciplinary consequences.
